Science projects are a great way for children to explore the natural world around them and to test out abstract ideas using their senses of taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound. Many teachers are embracing the idea of letting children explore areas of science that interest them individually. Instead of assigning science fair project topics, many teachers are giving students the freedom to come up with their own science project ideas.

Children may have a difficult time deciding what the focus of their science fair project will be. They can come up with a lot of ideas, but narrowing down their decision to just one may be difficult for them. Help your child choose a topic based on something that he is genuinely curious about. This takes the boring factor out of the project and helps it not seem like school work.

Most school children love learning about animals, insects, and habitats. Some of the most fun and educational science projects are those involving living animals such as gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, snakes, ferrets, and different insects such as butterflies, caterpillars, and ants.

If your child opts to do a science fair project on an animal or insect, its best to choose one that is easy to carry from place to place, is not frightened by noisy environments or lots of people, and is the family's own pet or borrowed from someone else. Parents should never purchase an animal for the sole purpose of a science project because the animal will need a place to live after the project is finished.

Many students have made their own unique versions of volcanoes using baking soda and paper macheâ€”or have experimented with the very messy, and very popular, candy rocket by dropping peppermint candies into a 2-liter bottle of diet cola.
